How intelligent is your body?
Think about the last time you had a cut on your finger. Maybe a paper cut, or you cut yourself while chopping veggies for your dinner. How did your finger heal? Was it the band-aid that healed it? Did you have to focus and concentrate on your finger healing? Of course not! Your body knows how to heal itself.
The way that our body knows how to heal the cut is through our nervous system. The nervous system is made up of the brain, spinal cord and all of the nerves which go to every part of the body. This system controls every organ, gland and tissue in our body and all of our senses. There are messages constantly being sent to and from your brain and your body.
To give you an example, look at your hand and wiggle your fingers. Now, do it again but try to think about every muscle you have to control in order to make the movement occur. That’s a lot of work! We don’t give our bodies and our nervous system enough credit. While our nervous system is communicating from your brain to your hand to wiggle your fingers; it is also digesting the last meal you ate, controlling your breathing, heart rate, and so much more! If we had to consciously think about doing all of these things, most of us wouldn’t make it out of bed in the morning.
Think of all the people you know (maybe even you) who struggle with headaches, digestive issues, fatigue or any other health problem. We just learned about how intelligent our nervous system is and it does so many things without us thinking about it. Isn’t it possible that these concerns are our body is trying to tell us something?
Our bodies have an amazing ability to heal.
So, why do so many of us still struggle with headaches, digestive issues or other health problems? These issues happen when our body is unable to adapt to the stresses of life.
Imagine your nervous system like a fuse box. When we plug something into an outlet and blow a fuse, that is a safety mechanism to prevent further damage in the house. Our body works in a similar way, when our body is over loaded with stress we can “blow a fuse.” At Revival Chiropractic, we teach people about the different kinds of stress. We call these stresses the “3 T’s”.
1. Trauma
This can include a car accident, a slip and fall or a sprain or strain. It can also include microtraumas. A microtrauma is a repetitive motion or position that compromises the body over time. An example of a microtrauma is poor posture.
2. Toxins
Toxins include the things in our environment that we breathe in, food or drinks we consume, or even the lotions or make up we use on our skin.
3. Thoughts
Our body doesn’t know the difference between a scenario that you are thinking about and one that is actually happening. We all have hundreds of thoughts each day that we attach emotions to.
Stress isn’t always bad! There can be positive stresses as well. For example, physical exercise is very beneficial for our bodies even though it causes temporary stress. Exercise becomes a negative stress when we are moving incorrectly or if we are pushing our bodies to do things we aren’t ready for.
How do you know if your body is not adapting to stress?
Most of us know when we aren’t adapting to stress because those pesky symptoms show up. However, the body will have decreased function long before the symptoms come. At Revival Chiropractic, we do a set of gentle neurological scans that allow us to see how the body is functioning on a deeper level. This allows us to see issues in your system that you are currently feeling, as well as ones that aren’t showing up yet. We always start with scans to see where we are starting in your health journey. We continue to do scans throughout your care to track your progress and see how your body is changing and adapting. We suggest that everyone gets checked by a chiropractor, so they can be sure their nervous system is functioning optimally. Our scans are extremely gentle and safe for infants, pregnant women and children.”
We just spent a lot of time talking about how amazing your nervous system is but how does that relate to chiropractic? When most people hear chiropractic, they relate it your neck and back. Our spine is the protector of the nervous system! When we adjust your spine, it affects your nervous system. At Revival, our adjustments are tailored to your nervous system.
Dr. Monica and Dr. Anna have special training in a technique that addresses the nerves first. We do this because we know that the nerves control everything! Muscles are responsible for moving our bones and our nerves are responsible for controlling the muscles. With our technique, we go directly to the root of the cause and our adjustments help to flip your fuse back on! The adjustment recharges your nervous system allowing your body to heal the way it is supposed to. This helps your body adapt to the stresses of life in a positive way rather than succumbing to stress.
When our system is able to adapt to stress, you are able to function well which allows you to feel better. When we have our health, we are able to be better friends, spouses, co-workers, parents and humans in general! You can enjoy each and every moment of life and live to your fullest potential.
If you would like to learn more about your body and how it adapts to stress, join us at our next “Tuesday Talk with the Docs!” at 6:30 PM on October 30th at our office. This class is free an open to everyone.
